Chapter 367: Breakthrough Task, Return to the WildernessDockside.
The morning fog was thick.
The people who had escaped from the warehouse were lying exhausted inside a vacant apartment building, quietly waiting for the arrival of the rescue boat.
Matthew stepped out of the apartment building, wiped the damp steps, and sat down with a plonk next to Bi Fang, seeing him still fiddling with the drone, he asked curiously, “So, can you see anything clearly?”
Bi Fang hung his hands low, sighed, and handed over the drone: “No use, it’s too dark, plus the glare from the flames. Can only see half a face no matter how I adjust it.”
Matthew took the drone and, even after adjusting it numerous times, still felt disappointment knowing the situation; he squinted at the screen but could discern nothing.
The firelight cast on the sharp contours of the man’s face, where sensitivity and sharpness interwove, the bridge of his high nose casting a shadow while one of his eyes was veiled in darkness, the other cold and expressionless.
Last night’s blaze had seen Bi Fang risk his life to return and capture footage, witnessing the leader of the men use a pistol to dispatch the bandit leader from sixty meters away and catch half of his side profile.
[With half a face, we should be able to reconstruct the image, right? Technology is so powerful now.]
[A bit challenging, I do this for a living, it involves light and shadow imaging, as well as 3D light sense and analysis of muscles and skeleton… all of which I’m embellishing.][Goodness, woke up this morning and saw it’s on trending, this guy’s never gonna be able to show his face again (dog’s head).]
[I saw it too, the guy who was photographed must be totally confused; anyone who knows him would recognize him.]
[Won’t Old Fang be subject to retaliation?]
[emmmmm, that does make some sense.]
[Afraid of what? Bring them on, Old Fang will smash them all to bits.]
“Too bad the drone was spotted, couldn’t capture more footage.”
Bi Fang was somewhat annoyed; last night, leaning against a wall, he let the drone fly out to film, but the opponent was too well-prepared, even having infrared sensing equipment. The drone was discovered and shot at before it got close, and he had no choice but to run.
In the end, it was a close call without any harm done, and Sisko, not yielding any results from the search, could only lead everyone to return.
Matthew patted Bi Fang on the shoulder to comfort him, “It’s okay, at least we know he’s Caucasian, right?”
Bi Fang let out a wry smile, was about to say something, but suddenly stood up.
Matthew thought something unexpected had happened and quickly scrambled to his feet, then saw the mist churn suddenly, and a black prow emerged through the mist before their eyes.
Matthew exclaimed in alarm, “Is that the one from yesterday?”
“No, it isn’t.” Bi Fang let go of the drone, allowed it to hover above their heads, and swiftly calculated the size of the boat based on the bow, “It’s much smaller than yesterday’s, not the same one.”
Realizing it wasn’t the same boat, Matthew paused momentarily but quickly caught on, shouting in surprise.
“The rescue boat!”
“Rescue boat?”
“Has the rescue boat arrived?”
“The rescue boat is here!”
Matthew’s shouting stirred the drowsy people, who were now wide awake, all sticking their heads out of the windows, looking at the distant boat, filled with excitement.
“Hush, don’t make noise.” In the midst of excitement, Bi Fang threw cold water on the situation, “It’s not certain if it’s a rescue boat yet, hide first and let the boat come closer.”
Hearing Bi Fang’s words, the previously thrilled crowd sobered up as if doused with cold water, recalling the terrifying scene from last night. A cold wind blew as they withdrew their heads, leaving only their eyes to silently watch.
Bi Fang, however, ran a bit further, reaching higher ground, and watched the vessel adorned with letters approach slowly. From its appearance, it was undoubtedly a fishing boat, yet the information provided by Abbascan was consistent.
Once docked, several soldiers disembarked from the fishing boat and quickly noticed Bi Fang standing on the high ground.
The soldiers seemed to recognize Bi Fang, saluting him at first glance, then one of them detached from the group, unloaded his rifle, handed it to a comrade, and ran alone toward the high ground.
Seeing this, Bi Fang’s heart finally eased.
It was over.
…
The drone soared into the sky, the sky clear as crystal following last night’s rain, a vast expanse of blue.
“Saved over fifty people, how does that feel?”
Matthew, in his casual manner, sat at the bow’s deck, tossing over a bottle of mineral water, looking down at the survivors who were crying and helping each other on board, feeling an indescribable emotion within.
“I’m very tired, just want a good sleep. If you hadn’t shown up, I wouldn’t have had to be in this mess now. Please don’t follow me anymore, okay?”
“Am I not helping you trend online?”
“Do I need that? Please, the line of women chasing after me could stretch from Antarctica to the Arctic Circle, okay?”
“Will I also have female fans this time?”
Bi Fang chuckled but didn’t reply; he guzzled down an entire bottle of water and then collapsed backwards onto the deck, with the sea breeze blowing and playing with his hair.
“Every time I meet someone, it’s never good news; I always feel like I’m either rescuing someone or on my way to do so. Give me a break, will ya?”
“You deserve to be famous, the world’s number one explorer…”
Matthew wanted to add something, but just as he opened his mouth, he heard faint snoring sounds. He shook his head with a laugh and leaned against the railing, slowly closing his eyes.
They had been awake for two days straight.
…
[Ding! Congratulations to the host for completing the quest: Ruins City. Rewards are being distributed, would you like to claim them?]
When Bi Fang woke up again, he found himself in the vast rear area of the eastern front lines of Abbascan, where the war hadn’t caused much damage, and the infrastructure was well-preserved.
Looking at the crowd in front of him and the leading officials, Bi Fang felt a bit of a headache and postponed claiming his reward.
Anyone would feel lousy after not sleeping for two days and then suddenly sleeping from dawn until evening—not to mention having to deal with a huge crowd of people.
Fortunately, representatives from Huaxia had also arrived, and after dealing with the formalities, Bi Fang had a meal with everyone before returning to the inn to continue his deep slumber.
It was only after waking up the next morning that Bi Fang’s mind finally felt completely clear. He downed a cup of warm water in one gulp, sweeping away all his fatigue.
“Claim.”
He opened the System and couldn’t wait to claim his mission rewards.
Reinforced concrete, bullets flying everywhere, intertwined cold grey shadows—all eventually fading into nothingness.
[Detection of no reward elevation, final rewards are: Skill Advancement Ticket*1, Skill Upgrade Coupon*2, Enhancement Points*3, Wilderness Points*800, Breakthrough Task Target*1 (unique and only one).]
His haul… was reasonable.
Bi Fang stroked his chin, comparing this mission’s gains to previous ones. It seemed like the rewards weren’t as high this time—was it because of the breakthrough task?
Bi Fang tried to open the task target, but found it was grayed out and unresponsive.
???
What’s going on?
A reward that can’t be used? What kind of reward is that?
Bi Fang was baffled; it was the first time he had encountered this situation. A reward that you can’t use, how is that a reward?
Is there a prerequisite condition?
Looking at the greyed-out target, that was all Bi Fang could think of. With no choice, he could only use the other rewards: add to agility and strength first, bringing them to fifteen, then prioritize his physique.
After using two Enhancement Points, Bi Fang tried to enhance his physique to sixteen but found, to his surprise, that it failed!
His physical stats on the panel did not increase, and the Enhancement Points were not consumed.
What’s happening, is the System crashing? How lame.
It was Bi Fang’s first time encountering such a situation; could fifteen be the system’s upper limit? But he didn’t feel anything at all—was the human limit really that low?
He couldn’t even break ten seconds in the 100m dash; could that even be called a limit?
Just as Bi Fang was puzzled, he suddenly noticed that the once gray breakthrough task had turned gold.
There’s hope!
[Ding! The host’s fulfillment of the prerequisites for the breakthrough task has been detected, activation in progress.]
Task one: Anoxic climb to the roof of the world—Mount Everest.
Task two: Unprotected deep-sea crossing—Tharp Debold Cave.
Task three: On foot crossing of the Sea of Death—Lop Nur.
